The body’s immune system is the most important thing to consider in keeping yourself free, not just from the Corona virus, but from any other virus or bacteria that may plague the body. – SLEEP CYCLES: Even though we know that sleep is important, it can be difficult to get enough, especially during busy times. The immune system is influenced by the sleep-wake cycles of our bodies. Getting enough sleep of an average of at least 7 to 8 hours per night helps increase the signals that activate the immune system and decreases stress levels. Your sleep cycle can negatively or positively affect your immune system.

– NUTRIENTS FROM FOOD: Health professionals highlight the importance of fruits and vegetables for obvious reasons. Studies show that fruits and veggies have vitamins C, A, E, B6 and B12 and minerals like iron and zinc which are important for the maintenance of immune function. So if your diet is very high on fruits and vegetables, your immune system will definitely thank you.

– CORTISOL LEVELS: Everyone is familiar with stress, particularly with the global pandemic, struggling to make ends meet and all. When we’re stressed, the levels of the stress hormone known as Cortisol, in increased and this makes it difficult for the immune system to function properly. I mean, if the American Psychological Association reports that 75% of Americans experience moderate to high levels of stress, then I can’t even imagine the percentage of Nigerians that go through high to highest levels of stress. Anyway, the higher your cortisol levels, the more your immune system suffers.

– HAND WASHING: Y’all know that this one is non-negotiable as the quickest way for germs to enter the body is through the hands. And yes, I know that washing your hands for 20-30 seconds feels like such a long time but it eliminates germs and decreases their chances of getting into your body and affecting your immune system.
